Super Retail Group Ltd (SUL) - 2026 strategy day insights

Store growth aspirations

12 June 2026

The key planks of Super Retail Group’s strategy are increasing both store count and store sizes, expanding the range of products and streamlining its operations and supply chain. The surprising element is the pace of store growth, which is well ahead of population growth and at-odds with likely migration towards online across its categories. The company will need to take market share to be successful and should do so.

Super Retail Group Ltd (SUL) - May 2026 trading update

Is this the low point?

08 May 2026

Super Retail Group’s May 2026 trading update shows a meaningful slowdown in sales, particularly in BCF and Supercheap Auto. These two businesses are more directly impacted by the spike in petrol and diesel prices. We expect soft sales trends to persist into FY27e, but also see gross margin gains from a stronger Australian dollar, self-help in Rebel and distribution centre benefits flowing through to earnings. We expect to hear more on these topics at Super Retail Group’s strategy day on 11 June 2026.

Super Retail Group (SUL) - 1H26 result analysis

Better margins ahead

02 March 2026

Super Retail Group reported 1H26 EBIT down 3%. The weaker result reflected elevated promotions in Rebel and weak sales in BCF. These issues should pass as Rebel’s inventory levels are lean and BCF has already seen an improvement in sales trends. We are positive on earnings outlook over the next two years helped by improving gross margins. Super Retail may see a 70bp gain from the higher Australian dollar. Super Retail Group have arranged an investor day on the 11th June 2026.

Super Retail Group (SUL) - Currency beneficiary

New CEO has helpful starting point

06 February 2026

Super Retail Group has earnings upside in Rebel and from its new Victorian distribution centre. The addition of a currency tailwind for cost of goods in FY27e supports solid EPS growth. We estimate a 10% lift in the Australian dollar could be a $30 million, or 8% EBIT benefit. It is a 71bp boost to gross margins. While there is some uncertainty given changeover of CEO and a new three-year strategy plan coming, we expect the plan to have few surprises.

Super Retail Group (SUL) - Trading update shows margin pressure

No prosperity in over-promoting

14 January 2026

Super Retail Group has set a tone for the trading updates across retail. For 1H26e, the company will achieve 4% sales growth, but profit before tax will fall 7%. The weakness is largely attributable to price discounting in Rebel and negative leverage in BCF. The fundamental debate is likely to centre on the sustainability of profit margins. Supercheap Auto has likely peaked and BCF margins are relatively healthy. The turnaround opportunity is Rebel, but competition make it harder to see substantial margin recovery.

New Zealand retail turning a corner

Which retailers stand to benefit?

09 September 2025

New Zealand has been a challenging retail market for most companies over the past 18 months. However, there are clear signs retail sales are likely to improve. Rate cuts of 250bp that began in August 2024 are starting to boost incomes and recent sales trends have been stronger. We expect NZ retail spending to rebound to 3.6% growth in FY26e, up from 0.6% growth in FY25. The three retailers with the largest sales exposure and upside to better NZ sales trends are Ampol, Harvey Norman and Bapcor.  NZ could account for 2%-3.5% in operating profit growth for these companies.

Super Retail (SUL) - FY25 result analysis

Margin rebound

01 September 2025

Super Retail Group’s FY25 result revealed an encouraging reversal of fortunes in the second-half. While 1H25 EBIT fell 7%, 2H25 EBIT rose 9%. The better gross margin and lower cost growth in 2H25 are likely to support earnings in FY26e. While margins are better, sales trends remain volatile and we only forecast 2% EBIT growth in FY26e. There will be a drag from higher overhead costs. While margins are improving, the sales backdrop is unlikely to accelerate much making it difficult to accelerate earnings growth.

Super Retail Group Ltd (SUL) - May 2025 trading update

Margins mean reverting

13 May 2025

Super Retail Group’s trading update shows a slight slowing in sales but bigger drop in gross margins. The pressure on gross margins is most acute in Supercheap Auto based on our feedback and could carry through to 1H26e.

The Australian retail sector imports a significant portion of products from offshore, particularly in non-food categories. In most cases, these goods are purchased in a foreign currency, which means currency volatility can impact the cost of goods and retail profits. In Issue 9 of Price Watch, we analyse the impact that changes in the Australian dollar against the US dollar (AUD/USD) can have on retail prices and profitability. A fall in the AUD/USD typically impacts retail prices with a six-month lag.

Most retailers have highlighted how much tougher their NZ operations have been over the past year. The magnitude of the interest rate pain combined with lower levels of household savings has created a much tougher backdrop. However, conditions are improving and rate cuts have been significant with more to come. NZ retail sales should recover over 2025, more so in the second-half. We have pulled together a chart pack that provides a perspective on the NZ economic outlook, retail sales forecasts and financial performance of major retailers in that market. We include both ASX-listed retailers and NZ-centric retailers.
